Sunday Drive - Cedar Breaks National Monument
For this week’s Sunday drive we are highlighting the beautiful Cedar Breaks National Monument!
The Cedar Breaks overlook is located about an hour and twenty minutes away from St George and is 23 miles east of Cedar City. Aside from the beautiful drive and views, one of the bonuses is that the weather is often much cooler there. Kind of like a mini Bryce Canyon, Cedar Breaks is a natural amphitheater, and you can either make the drive just for the views or you can head there to enjoy some of the hikes. It stretches across 3 miles and is over 2,000 feet deep and is definitely one of those places you have to see because pictures don’t do it justice.
One of the really cool things about Cedar Breaks to take note of is the bristlecone pine trees. The oldest known bristlecone pine in that area is over 1,600 years old and all of them are just amazing to see. Hearty trees, they are able to withstand low temperatures, strong winds, and less than favorable soil, which makes them kind of perfect for the area. Bristlecone are said to be the oldest living known trees in the world and they are definitely cool to see right in our backyard.
To visit Cedar Breaks, each person does need a pass, which can be easily purchased online. So grab your passes, fill up your gas tank, and head to Cedar Breaks and enjoy the amazing views that we are lucky to be so close to.
