Sunday Drive - Gunlock Falls

The falls at Gunlock State Park are flowing again, a rare sight you don’t want to miss. Gunlock Falls is a beautiful natural attraction located near the town of Gunlock. This stunning waterfall is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike and is known for its crystal-clear waters and stunning surroundings. The cascading falls are created when the reservoir reaches capacity and creates a stunning natural waterfall.

Gunlock State Park is just 35 minutes out of St. George City and the journey to the falls is almost as beautiful as the destination. This time of year, Old Highway 91 is in full bloom with rolling green hills and lush trees. But as you turn towards Gunlock Road the scenery changes into the desert landscape and red rocks southern Utah is famous for.

Keep in mind that the falls don’t occur every year and have only appeared a handful of times in the last decade making Gunlock State Park a popular and often overcrowded area. So, if you want an unobstructed view of the falls for photographs or if you just want a more peaceful experience, the earlier you arrive the better.

Whether you choose to get up close to the falls or view their beauty from the car, the rarity of the falls makes them a must-see destination. The falls can be seen from the road up close after a quick 5–10 minute hike perfect for people of all ages.

One of the unique features of Gunlock Falls is the natural amphitheater that surrounds it. The steep cliffs that rise on either side of the falls create a natural arena, providing a great place to sit and watch the action in the water below.

Even when the falls aren’t flowing, Gunlock State Park is beautiful year-round with activities for everyone. The state park has space for boating, fishing, camping, swimming, kayaking, hiking, and picnic areas.

Gunlock Falls and Gunlock State Park offer a unique and memorable experience for visitors. Whether you're seeking outdoor adventure, a peaceful retreat in nature, or simply a chance to admire the beauty of this natural wonder, Gunlock Falls is worth a visit.

The park is open year-round from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM with varied entry fee prices depending on the type of activity you want to engage in. To plan your visit to Gunlock State Park and check the status of the falls visit https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/gunlock/
